Built-Up Roof (BUR) systems are the most popular roofing choice for flat or low-slope commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. Commonly referred to as "Tar and Gravel" roofs, BUR roofs are composed of alternating layers of asphalt, coal tar, or cold-adhesive bitumen between three, four, or five layers (ply’s) of fabric to create a waterproof, fire-retardant membrane. A final layer of top-coat gravel, mineral granules, glass fiber, or surfaced cap sheets is then applied to provide protection and help reflect heat from the building.
